Frequently asked questions - the first week - We've received so many questions in the past few days, I thought it would be best to answer the most common ones here:
I can't find my mosque! What kind of site is this? It is a user-driven site that depends on you, dear reader, to help build and maintain the database. While we are busy adding mosques on our own (there are still about 500 mosques & schools that are being added by the salat-o-matic team over the next week, and we're aiming to go over the 1000 mark soon), if you don't see your mosque, you can add it and make our job a lot easier.
How do I add a masjid or school? Just navigate to the area where the masjid/school should be, then click on the "Add Mosque" link in the upper right corner.
What kind of review should I leave? Try to be as constructive as possible - this site is meant as a positive resource for Muslims and the institutions that serve them. Overly harsh or critical reviews, with sweeping generalizations, slurs, or accusations, will be removed. Also, this is not a place for theological debate.
Please make sure to read our FAQ for more answers to your pressing questions. | |

We're open for business! - Assalamu alaikum, and welcome to salat-o-matic - an editable database of mosques and Islamic schools anywhere in the world where Muslims are a minority! Based on the same review engine as zabihah.com, this site is meant to help you find the Muslim institutions in your area that meet your needs. Our purpose is to keep our community resources accountable to those they serve, by having honest reviews about facilities, activities, and quality of service. But we can't be a success without you! Please add the institutions in your area to our growing database, and review the ones in your area, so that salatomatic.com can become a valuable resource! |
The public beta begins - The basic structure of salat-o-matic is now done, and we need your help! We'll be spending the next few weeks adding more than 1000 mosques to the database, and you can help by doing one of two things: adding mosques in your area that aren't already on our database, and editing mosques already in the database to include information we don't have yet. |
Welcome to salat-o-matic! - Thank you for participating in the closed beta release of salat-o-matic. Now that the initial coding has been completed, we need you to make sure everything works all right, including the record submission & editing features, as well as the site navigation. Make sure that mosques and schools are listed in their proper area, and check for duplicates. Report all bugs to us here. Thank you in advance for all your help! |

| | ★★★★ Madina Masjid has been my local masjid for my entire life, and although it has taken them a long time, I honestly believe we have started to make progress. Within the last 2-3 years they have expanded there many services, particularly those for youth and children. A summer camp for muslim girls was launched last year and AlhumdulillAllah it was such a great success that it was held again this year. A boys hockey league was also started last year and it too obtained a huge turnout. Both these events are fully run by youth for the kids! I agree that as being one of the oldest masjids, we have not progressed as much as I would have liked, but InshAllah we continue to improve in the coming future. In terms of the Women's space, there is an entire floor dedicated to them and also a medium-sized room in the main floor. I love my community now and believe we have so much potential, InshAllah we learn to use it! =) |

| | ★★★★★ This is a very active and lively masjid a few blocks east of the famous Devon Ave neighborhood. Masjid Al-Noor is the center of Dawah Tabligh in Chicagoland but you do not have to be a Tablighi to enjoy this masjid. It is open almost all the time and you are welcome to stay as long as you like. The prayer area, washroom, and wudu facilities are very clean and welcoming. The congregation is diverse unlike other Devon area masjids. Lectures on Saturday night are well attended and the high number of Muslims in the neighborhood ensures a large attendance at regular daily salat as well. |

| | ★★★★★ This is an impressive masjid. The architecture and the decoration inside the masjid are inspiring. Imam Senad is a local institution in the Chicago Muslim community and a national leader of the Bosnian Muslim community. His khutbas are thoughtful and calm as opposed to vigorous, angry khutbas. If you come early to jumma, you will be rewarded by the excellent Quran recitation of a community elder in the Bosnian/Turkish style. Stay after jumma and you can enjoy a 5 minute dhikr session. If you have ever been to the Balkans or Turkey, you will feel like you are there again if only for a while. The masjid has regular lectures and many interfaith events. |

| | ★★★★★ Masjid Farooq is a quality masjid with a dedicated imam and consistently good khutbas. Brothers and sisters areas are the same size with brothers upstairs and sisters downstairs. Street parking is readily available. One great advantage of this masjid is the availability: if the masjid is locked for some reason, the corner store is run by muslims who can always lend you the key. |

| | ★★★★★ This information needs to be edited as the khtubas at Jamia are in Arabic. There is a speech (bayaan) before the khutba that is in Urdu and is really excellent if you can understand it. Overall this is a great masjid for those of you who need to pray and want a serene ambience. Unlike a lot of other places, you can stay as long as you want. The masjid and wudu area are exceptionally clean despite the number of people that use this masjid. Jumma is really crowded but if you want to taste the experience of Jumma in India/Pakistan, this is the real thing. You will see streams of people coming down the sidestreets walking in to a packed masjid.
One criticism is the small women's prayer area that is very separated from the rest of the masjid. This will be rectified in the new expansion that is being planned. |

| | ★★★★★ MCC is one of the largest and oldest masjids in Chicago. The masjid has funeral services (including facilities to wash the deceased), Saturday/Sunday schools, evening lectures by the imam, an attached dawah center with tons of activities for converts, and facilities for small parties. It is also host to monthly health screenings and zakat/sadaqa distribution to community members who need them. The building is old and the parking lot is cramped but this masjid is full of life and home to a gigantic community that is increasingly diverse. Almost everything (including khutbas) is in English except for one weekly Arabic lecture. |

| | ★★★★★ This masjid is the center of a large community on the North Side and northern suburbs of Chicago. The masjid section is under construction so daily salat and Jumma is currently in the gymansium of the attached school. Everything is done in English and the congregation is a mix of liberal and traditional Muslims. The new imam is a great resource and there are classes every night and Sunday school for children. This place has a big masjid feel but if you choose to get involved, it can be have a tight-knit family feel. | - Posted for MECon November 16, 2008

| | ★★★★ Great Masjid! Lovers of Ahlul Bayt are not few here. |

| | NR Nice, small Masjid located in a relatively quiet working class part of the city. Strong, dedicated community. The Imam is a very pleasant, dedicated and knowledgable. Community is conservative. |

| | ★★★ My only complaint is the Mosque should have some type of distinguishing characteristic to let people, especially travelers and/or locals who are new to that part of town that they're at the right place. There is no visible sign or even crescent moon symbol on roof. The neighborhood is a student area that has fraternity houses. |
